When is the Best Time to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

The best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons, from January to March and June to October. These months provide the most favorable weather conditions, with clear skies, less rain, and more stable trails, which enhance both the climbing experience and the breathtaking views. January to March tends to be slightly colder but less crowded, making it ideal for those who prefer a quieter trek. June to October is the peak climbing season, attracting larger numbers of climbers due to warmer weather and excellent visibility.

The rainy seasons—April to May and November—make climbing more challenging due to slippery, muddy trails and cloudier conditions, but they also bring fewer crowds and greener landscapes. For adventurers looking for solitude and a unique experience, the rainy season can still be rewarding. Ultimately, the dry seasons are the most recommended for those who want the best chance of a safe, enjoyable, and scenic climb.

Weather and Climate on Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro’s weather varies dramatically due to its height and different ecological zones. At the base, temperatures in the rainforest zone average between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F), offering warm and humid conditions. As climbers ascend, the temperature drops significantly, especially in the alpine desert and arctic summit zones. Nighttime temperatures at higher altitudes often fall below freezing, and summit temperatures can drop to -20°C (-4°F) or lower.

The mountain has two rainy seasons—March to May (long rains) and November (short rains). During these months, the lower slopes become lush and green, but climbing conditions are more difficult. The dry seasons from January to March and June to October are more predictable, with clearer skies, less rainfall, and better chances of reaching the summit successfully. Climbers must always be prepared for rapidly changing weather, as conditions can shift quickly on the mountain.

Cycling to the Kilimanjaro Summit is a rare and thrilling adventure that combines mountain biking and high-altitude trekking on Africa’s highest peak. This specialized expedition allows you to cycle where terrain permits and push the bike where necessary, carefully conserving energy for the most important challenge—summit day.

Reaching Uhuru Peak depends heavily on proper acclimatization, which is why this itinerary is designed to allow gradual altitude gain and sufficient rest along the way. While some sections are rideable, pushing the bike is often more practical at higher elevations and helps preserve strength for the final ascent, which becomes increasingly demanding in thin air.

The summit attempt begins shortly after midnight, allowing enough time to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) at sunrise. After a short celebration and summit photos, you descend back down the mountain on a long and unforgettable ride of nearly 5,000 meters in elevation, making it one of the most unique cycling achievements in the world.

The route follows the Kilema Mountain Bike Trail inside Kilimanjaro National Park, a 4×4 gravel service road running parallel to the Marangu Route, generally in fair condition and suitable for a combination of cycling and pushing.

Londorosi route: It is also located at the western part of the mountain and you can climb it in 6-8 days. 7 Days Kilimanjaro Climb – Londorosi Route is also known as Shira Plateau. It is used rarely as it requires a 4 x 4 vehicle to drive you from Londorosi gate to the end of vehicle track 22km farther. This route is suitable only during the dry season. It is a popular route for honeymoon trips and people who like the trails which are not populated.

Climbing via Shira Plateau route looks similar to the Lemosho route. The only difference is that you’ll drive from Londorosi gate to Morrum barrier, about 22km, which takes less than 2 hour and the hike can start from there. Also via this route can be climbed for 6days, 7Days and 8days but we strongly recommend at least 7days itinerary in order to get more time for relax and acclimatization.

Umbwe Route: Is the most scenic but is recommended only for experienced climbers. It starts with a quick ascend, so it provides very little time for acclimatization. It is located at the southern part of the mountain and referred to whisky route because of its steep ascend. It can be climbed in 6 to 7 days. To get to Umbwe gate 1600m you have to drive to Machame gate first to get your entry permit, then you have to drive about 30km back to Moshi and take a diversion left to Umbwe village. 6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb – Umbwe Route

Compared to the other routes it does not provide enough time for acclimatization because from beginning it is very steep.

Great company, guides, and Kilimanjaro experience! Myself and 2 friends went with Eastland for the 8-day Kilimanjaro trek via Lemosho route, and had the adventure of a lifetime! We went as part of a group of 17, which included wonderful guides, porters, and cooks. All were so pleasant, positive, and helpful in making our hike memorable. Food, tents, bathrooms throughout were set up well and despite the extreme conditions on the mountain we were well taken care of. I came with friends and left with a family, go with Eastland! Shoutout to Charles and David our guides, and all we met on our journey.

Great experience for 4-day safari We hired Eastland to be our safari guide for a 4-day trip. Daniel (owner of the company) helped us plan the trip, he and the rest of the people involved were great to work with. Dilly was our guide and he was awesome! He was great to travel with, extremely knowledgeable, and accommodated whatever we needed. Dilly knows a bunch of other guides, which was very helpful. Each guide would let others where to find certain exotic animals if they came across them. We saw every animal we wanted to see (lions, hippos, elephants, monkeys, etc.) and saw a ton throughout the park. Highly recommend Eastland Adventures for a safari.

Wonderful Experience hiking Kilimanjaro! My wife and I hired Eastland Adventures to guide us on the 8-day Lemosho route to hike Kilimanjaro. It was an amazing experience thanks to our crew below! Guides - Charles and Erick Chef - Shedrack Waiter - Albini Private Restroom Porter - Mlay Porters 1. Denis 2. Petro 3. Rajabu 4. Natanaeli 5. Fredy 6. Juma The entire crew was extremely attentive, helpful, and overly accommodating. The whole crew was very helpful with assisting minor things that made the experience great, such as setting our tent up in optimal areas each night, helping us with our hiking needs (fixing water bladders, adjusting poles, etc.), and going above and beyond to ensure we summited the peak. Highly recommend this crew. Charles and Erick are guides you want to summit the mountain with. They were knowledgeable, motivating, and a pleasure to be around throughout the entire trip! We thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them and they were crucial to our success, helping us with whatever we needed. They even offered to carry our backpacks the night of the summit. Eastland Adventures is also a locally run company. We preferred supporting the local people and felt our experience with Erick and Charles was better than those who used larger international companies, from what we could see. We’ll remember this trip forever due to Charles, Erick, and the rest of the crew! Highly recommend Eastland Adventures if you want to summit Kilimanjaro.

Kilimanjaro Lemosho route, four day safari and balloon flight over Serengeti! Please do not look past this company! They were so attentive and supportive for our team of ten on the Kilimanjaro climb and safari tour. Before we even finished our sentence if we went to make a request, it was being acted upon! They fully understand the hiker experience and do everything in their power to make it the most enjoyable and rewarding journey right from the moment you step off the plane. Amazing adventure Hi Daniel and team, I would just like to say thank you for the amazing experience that I had with Eastland Adventures and Take Shape Adventures. Your team of guides and porters were absolutely fantastic. I especially love the conversations that I was able to have with Tlusa, David and Leo. I really appreciated Tlusa sharing his family stories with me and through David I have a much better understanding of Tanzania. The summit day, was exhilarating and very tiring, talking to David really helped me enjoy the walk down from the summit. Thank you so much to all your team, you have made my holiday absolutely incredible. Thanks Sally

11/10 RECOMMEND EASTLAND ADVENTURES for Kili climb! ❤️ Safe, knowledgeable, prepared, fun & successful! Climbing Kilimanjaro with Eastland Adventures was the experience of a lifetime. We were amazed by the large support team—many hands truly made light work. The guides were knowledgeable, fun, and incredibly supportive. They knew every detail of the mountain and made us feel safe at every step. Summit day was no joke, but when we got stuck, they carried our packs (on top of there's!!) when we struggled (still makes me tear up), helping us reach the top. The food was incredible (especially for being on a mountain!), and the accommodations before the climb were clean and secure. Everything was thoughtfully organized—even personalized mugs! Can’t recommend them enough. Feel free to message on IG: @mellewilliamson.
