Traveling Safely in Tanzania: What You Need to Know

Travel safety is Eastland Adventures’ top priority! When planning your Tanzania holiday, it’s natural to ask: Is it safe to travel here? The short answer is yes—Tanzania is a safe destination for travelers, provided you take the usual precautions you would when visiting any country.

Located in East Africa, Tanzania is famous for its stunning landscapes, iconic wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. From the sweeping plains of the Serengeti to the towering heights of Mount Kilimanjaro and the idyllic beaches of Zanzibar, it draws millions of visitors every year. While the country offers unforgettable experiences, travelers often want reassurance about safety before embarking on their journey.

In this guide, we’ll cover key aspects of traveling safely in Tanzania, including general travel safety tips, health precautions, cultural norms, and practical advice to ensure your adventure is worry-free and fully enjoyable.

General Safety in Tanzania

Political Stability

Tanzania is widely regarded as one of the most politically stable countries in East Africa, with a peaceful history and a reputation as a safe haven for tourists compared to some neighboring nations. While political protests or demonstrations are rare, it’s always wise to stay informed about current events and avoid large gatherings to ensure a smooth and worry-free trip.

Crime

Like any travel destination, petty crime such as pickpocketing or bag snatching can occur in urban areas like Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Zanzibar’s Stone Town. Travelers are advised to keep valuables secure, avoid walking alone at night in less-populated areas, and use licensed taxis or transportation arranged by trusted tour operators. In contrast, rural areas and national parks are extremely safe, as tourism is the main focus and crime is minimal.

Terrorism Concerns

Tanzania has experienced very few incidents related to terrorism, and security measures at airports, borders, and major tourist hubs are thorough. These precautions help ensure that visitors can enjoy their safari and travel experiences with confidence, knowing that safety is a top priority throughout the country.

Health and Medical Precautions

Before traveling to Tanzania, it’s essential to consult your doctor about recommended vaccinations. Common vaccines include yellow fever (required if coming from a yellow fever-endemic country), hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and tetanus. Taking these precautions helps ensure a safe and healthy trip while exploring the country’s national parks, cities, and cultural sites.

Malaria Prevention

Tanzania is a malaria-endemic country, so travelers should take preventive measures seriously. Carry anti-malaria medication, use insect repellent containing DEET, and sleep under mosquito nets, especially in rural areas or while on safari. These simple steps significantly reduce the risk of malaria and allow you to enjoy your adventure with peace of mind.

COVID-19 Protocols

Although many COVID-19 restrictions in Tanzania have been eased, it’s important to stay updated on current entry requirements. Carry vaccination proof or recent test results if needed, and follow any local guidelines to ensure smooth travel and access to all safari and tourism activities.

Access to Medical Services

Tanzania has hospitals and clinics in major cities and towns, though the quality of care can vary. For serious medical conditions, private facilities such as Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi are recommended. Travelers are also advised to carry travel insurance that includes medical evacuation coverage, especially when visiting remote national parks or rural areas, to ensure a safe and worry-free experience.

Wildlife Safety

Tanzania is renowned for its incredible wildlife, but respecting the boundaries between humans and animals is essential. Whether on safari or trekking through the wilderness, always follow the instructions of your guide to ensure a safe experience. Never approach animals on foot unless explicitly permitted, remain inside your safari vehicle unless directed otherwise, and maintain a safe distance from elephants, lions, hippos, and other potentially dangerous wildlife. National parks and game reserves are strictly regulated, with rangers present to protect both visitors and the animals, making it possible to enjoy Tanzania’s spectacular wildlife safely and responsibly.

Cultural Sensitivity and Respect

Tanzania is a culturally diverse country with deep-rooted traditions, so understanding and respecting local customs is essential. Visitors should dress modestly, especially in urban areas and rural villages, while beachwear is acceptable along the coast and in resorts. Being mindful of religious practices is also important, particularly in Zanzibar, which has a significant Muslim population, and during occasions like Ramadan. Additionally, always ask for permission before taking photos of locals or their property to show respect for their privacy and traditions.

Road Safety and Transportation

Tanzania’s road network varies widely, with well-paved highways connecting major cities and rough, unpaved roads in rural areas. Driving can be challenging due to poorly maintained roads, unpredictable driving habits, and frequent crossings by pedestrians or livestock. For safety and convenience, it is highly recommended to hire a local driver or rely on a reputable tour operator like Eastland Adventures for all transportation needs. While public buses, known as “dala-dalas,” are a cheap option, they are often overcrowded and not ideal for tourists; private transfers or licensed taxis provide a safer and more comfortable alternative.

Natural Disasters and Weather

Tanzania has a tropical climate, which can bring occasional flooding during the rainy seasons (March–May and November–December). Travelers are advised to plan trips during the dry seasons (June–October and January–February) for better road conditions and optimal wildlife viewing. Although earthquakes are rare, Tanzania has active volcanoes such as Ol Doinyo Lengai. Guided tours to volcanic regions are carefully managed to ensure visitor safety, allowing travelers to explore these unique landscapes with confidence.

Amazing adventure Hi Daniel and team, I would just like to say thank you for the amazing experience that I had with Eastland Adventures and Take Shape Adventures. Your team of guides and porters were absolutely fantastic. I especially love the conversations that I was able to have with Tlusa, David and Leo. I really appreciated Tlusa sharing his family stories with me and through David I have a much better understanding of Tanzania. The summit day, was exhilarating and very tiring, talking to David really helped me enjoy the walk down from the summit. Thank you so much to all your team, you have made my holiday absolutely incredible. Thanks Sally

11/10 RECOMMEND EASTLAND ADVENTURES for Kili climb! ❤️ Safe, knowledgeable, prepared, fun & successful! Climbing Kilimanjaro with Eastland Adventures was the experience of a lifetime. We were amazed by the large support team—many hands truly made light work. The guides were knowledgeable, fun, and incredibly supportive. They knew every detail of the mountain and made us feel safe at every step. Summit day was no joke, but when we got stuck, they carried our packs (on top of there's!!) when we struggled (still makes me tear up), helping us reach the top. The food was incredible (especially for being on a mountain!), and the accommodations before the climb were clean and secure. Everything was thoughtfully organized—even personalized mugs! Can’t recommend them enough. Feel free to message on IG: @mellewilliamson.

Eastland Adventures made our Kilimanjaro dreams come true! Words cannot express our appreciation for the incredible trekking experience with Eastland Adventures that made our Kilimanjaro summit dreams come true. The exceptional care, attention to detail, and remarkable expertise was truly amazing. We are so grateful and would 100% recommend them for your Kilimanjaro climb! As we were planning our trip, we researched various trekking companies and a family member referred us to Eastland Adventures. We are so happy we chose them. From the beginning, communication with Daniel, founder and CEO, was phenomenal. Correspondence was timely, thoughtful, detailed, and very helpful. Our lead guide David and assistant guide Walter were absolutely incredible and shared so much with us during our expedition. They were patient, knowledgeable, and caring. Their encouragement and experience was instrumental in creating a successful and fun adventure. We truly appreciated the way our guides taught us about the mountain, the people, and the culture. In addition to our amazing guides, the entire team of porters were superhuman, demonstrating remarkable strength and endurance. Carrying individual packs while balancing heavy loads on their heads, the team was truly inspiring. Their specialized skills ensured our comfort and well-being from setting up camp to crafting delicious meals to providing a portable clean toilet. It was wonderful to experience their camaraderie and joy, and the team's dedication to service was evident in every detail. Shout out to team Calimanjaro: Boniface, Jackson, Langaeli, Walle, Joseph, Ali, Oswald, John, Matei, and Shedrac. Mashujaa for life! In December 2024, we completed the 7-day Rongai route, which was great for acclimatization and to enjoy the Kilimanjaro adventure without feeling rushed. After our progress on the first day and with our guides' advice, we were able to spend two nights rather than one at a higher elevation to acclimatize better, which made our Kilimanjaro adventure even more successful. On summit night, we hiked up with our guides and support porters. Summit night/day was a challenging climb for us because of the altitude, and we would not have made it to the summit without our summit team. They were encouraging, patient, and supportive. Reaching the summit was a dream come true! Overall, it was an experience of a lifetime. Eastland Adventures went above and beyond what we could have ever imagined. Asante Sana Eastland Adventures!- Aarika and Miguel

Amazing once in a lifetime experience! Daniel at Eastland ensured that we were very comfortable during our entire trip. He arranged everything from transportation, lodging, knowledgeable mountain guides, fantastic cook, and amazing porters. We had a small group of family (only 3 of us). We didn't know what to expect landing in Tanzania for the first time, but felt very welcome and gained some new local family. Everything was on-time and as scheduled. We were fed like royalty and had, the always welcome, coffee and tea in the morning and tea time in the evening. The whole experience was once in a lifetime and we are sure we chose the correct outfit. The views spoke for themselves. We had ideal weather.

Awesome!!!! Great time all round! Porters, guides, drivers were friendly and professional. Food, campsites, sleeping tents, toilets all very good. Climbing Kilimanjaro was both beautiful and brutal especially on way down! I only wish we had taken more time with the safari and stayed longer. Really an existential experience we will never forget. Asante Tanzania!

Truly the trip of a lifetime. BOOK NOW!!! After our Kili hike, we chose to run in the Moshi marathon. Then, we departed on Safari for 4 days. MINDS BLOWN!!! Our driver Raymond was amazing! The roads to and from the national parks are CHALLENGING, and those within the park even more so. Be prepared for lots of bumps and mud, but the reward is MORE THAN WORTH IT!!! The Serengeti is never ending, and has more animals that you can even imagine. Ngorongoro is not to be missed either. Each and every detail was planned for us, which made it easier for us to really enjoy all that the country has to offer. DO NOT HESITATE to consider Eastland for your Tanzania adventure!!! Locally owned and operated!!
